Building Bridges

Students take on the role of an engineer who is charged with replacing either the Sagamore or Bourne Bridge over the Cape Cod Canal. The bridges over the Cape Cod Canal were built in the mid 1930's and have required more and more maintenance and repairs every year and have been identified as having been replaced for safety reasons. The engineer's goal is to come up with equations to model the chosen bridge replacement design for and write a report to the Army Corps of Engineering that includes the proposed structure of the bridge, the equations used to design the structure, and a sketch of the bridge.

Creature Project

Students have been recognized for their outstanding Algebra 1 skills and have been invited to apply to their dream graphic design internship. The job pays a salary that would allow students to buy a car, and pay for gas and insurance for an entire year. All they have to do is successfully demonstrate your knowledge and sense of imagination by graphically designing a creature of their choice. Students create a creature only their imagination can inspire using functions learned throughout the year (linear, absolute value, exponential, quadratic) to pass the interview process for their dream graphic design internship at Disney.

Gingerbread House

Students will use a milk carton (their gingerbread house) to find the area and perimeter measurements prior to tiling and decorating during the culminating activity. Students are calculating how much area they will have to decorate their gingerbread houses and use that information to determine and provide an explanation of whether a given amount of candy could fit. The audience is the other classmates, staff, and families/guardians. The task assesses students' skills of being able to measure to the nearest whole inch, and calculate area and perimeter.

Pitching an Ad to Gatsby

This is a performance task based on F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel, The Great Gatsby. Taking on the role of an employee at a marketing/ad agency, students create a social media ad that advertises one of Gatsby's parties. As marketing reps, students use this ad to attract Daisy to Gatsby's party. The ad should catch Daisy's eye using creativity, show the setting of the party, and use a literary device (figurative language) as the slogan and/or caption. The marketing rep, aka student, will then pitch their ad to Gatsby, the client, convincing him to use this ad from their agency instead of someone else's. Students must turn in the visual ad along with their written pitch notes to the teacher.

Personal Finance

Students demonstrate their financial literacy around saving money by designing Public Service Announcements (PSAs) to inspire people to save money. Students work in groups as part of a marketing team and receive an assigned demographic for which to create their PSA (elementary school children, recent college grads, families living paycheck to paycheck, individuals with high credit card or loan debt, people who make over $150,000 per year, professional athletes). Their challenge is to help educate their assigned demographic on effective ways to save money based on their individual situations through the creation of a tailored PSA.

Building Design Project

The city has a plot of land to be used to construct a building to benefit residents. The Mayor is welcoming all plans. Since she is seeking a modernized building, the building must incorporate rectangular prisms, cylinders, cones and spheres in the design. The design must encourage residents to utilize what is offered in this building. Students' job is to come up with a plan of use for the building and to design the building with the given criteria and constraints. Students work in pairs to complete this project. They need to find the volume of each shape as well as the total volume using the appropriate formulas. They are given constraints as to the area of the building as well as the total volume of the building.

Analyzing Molecular Properties to Improve Products

Students adopt the role of a consultant in a "think tank" firm, which are consultants to local business owners. The group has been asked to propose a better material for companies to use, based on their knowledge of chemical material science and the molecular properties of different materials. They consider the product that their chosen business makes (toys, video games / electronics, musical instruments, sports equipment, products from recycled materials, etc.) and what aspects of their new material would be an improvement in terms of making the business more efficient, making the product better, or generating more sales.
