Students take on the role of educator in presenting an argument that supports the use of their assigned periodic table or in presenting an argument against the use of their periodic table. The intended audience are the students presenting about different periodic tables. Through this assessment, students evaluate different periodic tables given their knowledge of periodicity and the patterns and trends observed within Mendeleev's periodic table.

MA Standards

HS.CHEM.1.1
Use the periodic table as a model to predict the relative properties of main group elements, including ionization energy and relative sizes of atoms and ions, based on the patterns of electrons in the outermost energy level of each element. Use the patterns of valence electron configurations, core charge, and Coulomb's law to explain and predict general trends in ionization energies, relative sizes of atoms and ions, and reactivity of pure elements. Clarification Statement: Size of ions should be relevant only for predicting strength of ionic bonding. State Assessment Boundary: State assessment will be limited to main group (s and p block) elements.
SL.11-12.4
Present information, findings, and supporting evidence, conveying a clear and distinct perspective, such that listeners can follow the line of reasoning, alternative or opposing perspectives are addressed, and the organization, development, vocabulary, substance, and style are appropriate to purpose, audience and a range of formal and informal tasks. (See grades 11-12 Language Standards 4-6 for specific expectations regarding vocabulary.)
W.11-12.1
Write arguments (e.g., essays, letters to the editor, advocacy speeches) to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts, using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence.
