Students listen to audiobooks of storybooks to listen to how music translates the mood of a story into sound and in that way supports the book's narrative. Students then select a favorite storybook and create the first twenty bars of a musical composition to be used at the beginning of a recording of an audiobook storybook. This composition should be connected to the overall message of the story, the setting, and/or the characters. At the end of the task, students complete a reflection to demonstrate their understanding of the connections between music, math skills, and storytelling.

3.NF.A.3
Explain equivalence of fractions in special cases, and compare fractions by reasoning about their size. [Note: Grade 3 expectations in this domain are limited to fractions with denominators 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8.]
3.NF.A.3.a
Understand two fractions as equivalent (equal) if they are the same size, or the same point on a number line.
3.NF.A.3.b
Recognize and generate simple equivalent fractions, e.g., 1/2 = 2/4, 4/6 = 2/3. Explain why the fractions are equivalent, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.
