Students will do the long jump in their PE class. They will collect data from this activity on how far they've jumped. When they collect the data, the teacher will type up a list of all the amounts. Students will choose what set of data they want to plot. They can choose between the whole 4th grade data, their class data, or an example of an Olympic set. Students use all the measurements to plot the data. When their line plots are complete, they will analyze their information by observing and asking questions about their plots. They will need to answer a peer's questions.
MA Standard
4.MD.B.4
Make a line plot (dot plot) representation to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8). Solve problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions by using information presented in line plots (dot plots). For example, from a line plot (dot plot) find and interpret the difference in length between the longest and shortest specimens in an insect collection.
