Students will create a design for an architectural structure to replace an empty space in our town. The architectural designs need to include at least one of each shape (cylinder, pyramid, cone, sphere and prism) as well as at least one shape that is a combination of two or more 3D shapes. Students need to create their design using the lot parameters provided by the teacher which include depth, height, and surface area of the build space. Students will need to justify how their design maximizes the available space in a way that would be useful and beneficial to the town.
MA Standards
GEO.G-GMD.A.3
Use volume formulas for cylinders, pyramids, cones, and spheres to solve problems.*
GEO.G-MG.A.1Use geometric shapes, their measures, and their properties to describe objects (e.g., modeling a tree trunk or a human torso as a cylinder).*
GEO.G-MG.A.3Apply geometric methods to solve design problems (e.g., designing an object or structure to satisfy physical constraints or minimize cost; working with typographic grid systems based on ratios).*
SMP.1Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
